Response essay #3(edit)
Iago is probably the most sinister fiend of all the shakespearean plays, for he is able to manipulate all his true desires, which means he is able to hide his true feelings of hatred from Othello. Iago believes that because Othello has had sexual intercourse with Emilia (Iago’s wife), and because of this supposed “sexual act,” Iago is taking revenge for his honor. As he states in his soliloquy at the end of act II “When devils will their blackest sins put on, / They do suggest at first with heavenly shows, / As I do now” (2.3.351-53). Iago has created a plan to take Roderigo’s money, replace Michael Cassio as Lieutenant, and eventually have Othello lose all hope in life.
In Roderigo’s case, he has a lust for Desdemona and because she is with Othello he wants to drown himself, Iago as a friend tells Roderigo not to worry for he will help him get Desdemona. Because Roderigo trusts him, Iago is able to get Roderigo to give him money so he can help Roderigo buy gifts for Desdemona. In reality Iago is pretending to help Roderigo, so at the same time Iago can take his money and have him be bait for Cassio’s demise.
During a celebration Cassio drinks to much, Roderigo would than instigate a fight with Cassio, and because of this fight Cassio loses his rank as lieutenant. Iago as the good honest friend he is, comforts Cassio and advises him how to get his rank as lieutenant back. Iago states, “Our general’s wife is now the general- I may say so in this respect, for that he hath devoted and given up himself to the contemplation, mark, and denotement of her parts and graces” (2.3:308-312). He basically tells Cassio to talk to Desdemona, so she can talk to Othello about getting his rank and reputation back. Iago’s true intentions are that he wants Cassio’s rank as lieutenant and wants to use Cassio and Desdemona against Othello, by making it look like they are having an affair behind Othello’s back. Also, Iago wants revenge for he thinks that Cassio slept with Emilia.
Iago in front of Othello acts as his friend and advisor. He tells him to be careful, for Desdemona is beautiful and might very well deceive him (Othello), as she deceived her father. Iago also acts as if he was a loyal soldier. Iago true intentions are to be able to put the calm and powerful Othello into a jealous rage, as Iago deceivingly tells Othello that Desdemona is cheating on him with Cassio. Othello as the intelligent man he is, does not believe it unless he has proof. Othello states “ Give me a living reason she’s disloyal” (3.3:425). Iago asks Othello if he gave Desdemona a strawberry covered handkerchief, Othello answers “ I gave her such a one. / ‘Twas my first gift (3.3,451-451). Iago then state “ I know not that; but such a handkerchief, / I am sure it was your wife’s did, I today see cassio wipe his beard with” (3.3:452-454).
As one can tell Iago has done many mischievous deeds in order to have his way and be able to get what he wants, such as having the rank of lieutenant, and getting money from Roderigo. Eventually, he is able to make Othello a monstrous creature no one would have expect. Iago’s heavenly shows are very much believable and that no one sees his blackest sin’s, not Roderigo, Cassio, or the calm and powerful Othello.

response essay 2(edit2)
What is a Hero? based on many opinions a hero is a protagonist in a book or movie and that the hero is physically strong and has magic powers. As young children, we believe that a hero is a person with inhuman strength and can shoot laser out of his/her eyes. This is a common misconception for a hero is more than just strength and must also possess other characteristics as well. Adults just like children believe that a hero is only known to be strong/powerful and only known through his/her appearance. A hero is not only someone with physical strength, but also must be brave, intelligent and willing to endure pain and suffering for others. Also, hero’s should not be boastful and should never hurt anyone without justified reasons. Even though, it is believed that a hero is righteous and does no wrong, heroes can be dark as well. As the book The Odyssey begins, Odysseus shows all these characteristics, which shows that Odysseus is heroic in many ways.
For a hero to posses or demonstrate bravery, a hero must be able to fight through a dark moment and be able to solve the problem. The hero steps in when devastation occurs, even when everyone else has given up. A hero that is brave will be able to devise a plan and be able to use that plan, even if he/she knows that he/she will die. He/She will do whatever it takes to keep the people safe. In the book/chapter IX, Odysseus lands on the island of the Cyclopes and makes a decision to check out the island and its inhabitants. As he enters a cave, not knowing the dangers he will pose to his friends. Regardless, he was brave enough to blind the Cyclops, so he can get out and avenge his fallen brethren's.
Besides being brave a hero must also possess intelligence, for being a “hero” is not based on brute strength. Intelligence is needed in both battle and in strategizing. Also, many have used intelligence in order to trick people, which is also known as cunning. For instance, Odysseus was able to trick Polyphemous into thinking that his name was Nobody. As Odysseus informed “Nobody is my name. My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions” (IX: 366-367). In this statement quoted from the book, it is obvious that Polyphemous is gullible and is easily tricked. Also, Odysseus (as in his disguise) is smart enough to trick the suitors that he is truly only just another old man. Odysseus, out of all the Greek heroes, is most likely the most cunning and intelligent. Even during the Trojan war he was able to devise a plan to create a wooden horse and hide inside the horse and would attack when the Trojans least expect it.
The third and final reason, why a hero must not only have brute strength but be able to feel pain either physically or mentally for Odysseus has suffered both and both have been hard and hurtful indeed. Odysseus has both endured pain and has inflicted pain as well, for when the suitors throws stools at the old man (Odysseus) or when Odysseus stabs the Cyclops's eye, so he can avenge his companions. Odysseus of all the greek heroes must have endured the most pain out of all of them for it took twenty years for him to be able to get back home to ithaca, if it was any other man he would have given up years ago. However even when he was home he was willing to endure the pain from the suitors, for he was willing to wait and devise a plan. This shows that in order for a person to be a hero, he/she must be able to have bravery intelligence and able to endure the pain from others. Even though heroes are known to be good and never dark, there are reason’s why Odysseus has characteristics that disqualify him of hero material. When he blinds the cyclops, and is escaping, he arrogantly boasts about blinding Polyphemous, Odysseus states “Cyclops, if any mortal man ever asks you who it was that inflicted upon your eye this shameful blinding, tell him that you were blinded by Odysseus, sacker of cities. Laertes is his father, and he makes his home in Ithaca” (IX: 501-503). Because of his boasting ad over-confidence, he is the one who causes the demise of his fellow companions and shipmates.
He may have been loyal, because he wanted to go home to be with his wife Penelope, but he was extremely disloyal for his infidelity. Basically, every time women went up on him, he never denies them or tell them no, he just went with it. He was being extremely disloyal sexually.
During the years, life has portrayed heroes by their appearance and never based on their wits, or bravery. As one can tell, a Hero is never based on his/her appearance or how strong he/she is, it is based on his/her characteristics and capabilities, such as intelligence, bravery, and endurance. Odysseus truly do possess these characteristics and capabilities, but he will always have characteristics that may disqualify him of being a hero, for example being boastful and disloyal, but Odysseus is a hero none the less.

1st response essay (edit2)
There are many codes of behavior in the book The Odyssey of Homer. Two of the most prominent are the code of hospitality and code of loyalty. The code of hospitality is used most often, and the code of loyalty is based off more of human instinct, as you can tell some of the servants such as Eumaios are still loyal to Odysseus, because based off their instinct, they know it is wrong to defy your master. These two codes were used constantly in the life of an ancient Greek.
The code of hospitality, is a code that must be followed, according to the guest god (Zeus). For instance when Odysseus gets stranded on the island of the Phaiakians, Nausika is willing to bring Odysseus into her palace, for him to rest. Also when Telemachos goes to Nestor’s palace to ask about news of his father (Odysseus), Nestor gives him gifts, food, and a place to stay. The gods of all gods, Zeus also known as the guest god, has made the code of hospitality a law for humans and gods alike to follow. The code of hospitality is used, only when a host provides hospitality and only after the host invites the guest into his/her home, otherwise a guest should not enter without an invitation. Entering into someones home without invitation is considered intrusion of privacy. So when Odysseus goes into the Cyclops cave he was wrong to do so, since the Cyclops never invited him in. Also, a guest must provide information about him/herself, where they came from, and why they are at the specific place.
Loyalty is a code of behavior that most Greeks follow because most Greeks believe that they will be punished if they ever become disloyal to a significant other or in a slaves case, their master. It is stated in the book that many have been both loyal and disloyal. For instance, Eumaios always stays loyal to Odysseus, by staying with Penelope and Telemachos, and he kept hoping that one day Odysseus will come back to Ithaca. Also, Telemachos is willing to stay on his fathers side (Odysseus’) fighting side by side against the suitors. Even, Penelope stayed loyal by not marrying another man, for she waited for 20 years hoping Odysseus will one day come back. She used cunning characteristics to keep the suitors waiting, in the book she said (book 2, 96-102) “ Young men, my suitors now that the great Odysseus has perished, wait, though you are eager to marry me, until i finish this web, so that my weaving will not be useless and wasted. This is a shroud for the hero Laertes, for when the destructive doom of death which lays men low shall take him, lest any Achaian woman in this neighborhood hold it against me that a man of many conquest lies with no sheet to wind him.” she would weave in the morning and at night she would unweave, so she could wait for odysseus peacefully. As, one can tell being loyal is a code of behavior that is very much followed by Greeks.
In the end, as you can see both of these codes are very much followed and most of the time they are required. As you can tell these two codes complement each other, since if you are not hospitable to a stranger/guest than you are being disloyal to Zeus, and if you follow the code of hospitality, you are very much following the ideas and thus being loyal to Zeus, the guest god.

The book also known as The Odyssey Of Homer has many codes of behavior. Two of the most prominent codes used are codes of hospitality and codes of vengeance. Codes of hospitality is used the most. The codes of vengeance is mostly stated when a family member is killed and it is stated that it is an automatic response to kill the person who killed your family member.
Codes of hospitality is used almost in every book in The Odyssey Of Homer. For instance when he got stranded on the island of the Phaiakians, or when Telemachos went to Nestor’s palace to ask about news on his father (odysseus). The codes of hospitality is used, only when the host allows you into their humble home, otherwise it is believed that it is considered intrusion of privacy.
The next most known codes of behavior is Vengeance, it is stated in the book that once a family member or relative is assassinated/killed you must kill the person who killed your family member. The whole point of vengeance is an automatic response in killing the person who killed your family member. For example when Agmemnon died his son Oretus killed the killer, or another instance is when the cyclops trapped Odysseus and his friends and started eating his friends, he had to blind him for two reason’s to get out of the cave and revenge for all his fallen companions.
Ones opinion on codes of hospitality and codes of vengeance are the two most prominent codes of behavior, and the two codes are used most in the book/chapters. These two codes are believe to be the most honorable out of all the other codes of behavior.

Odysseus truly do possess these characteristics and capabilities, but he will always have characteristics that may disqualify him of being a hero, for example being boastful and disloyal, but Odysseus is a hero none the less.

response essay 2
What is a Hero? based on many opinions a hero is portrayed as a protagonist in a book or movie and that the hero is physically strong and has magic powers. As young children, we believe that a hero is a person with inhumane strength and can shoot laser out of his/her eyes. Adults just like children believe that a hero is only known to be strong/powerful and only known through their appearance.
A hero is not only someone with physical strength, but also must be brave, intelligent and willing to endure pain and suffering for others. Also, hero’s should not be boastful and should never hurt anyone without justified reasons. Even though, it is believed that a hero is righteous and has no wrong, hero’s can be dark as well, examples such as arrogance, and disloyalty. As the book The Odyssey begins, Odysseus shows possession of all these characteristics and mindset of a hero and many more.
For a hero to posses or demonstrate bravery, a hero must be able to fight through a dark moment and be able to defeat the problem. The hero step in when a devastation occurs, even when everyone else have given up. a hero that is brave will be able to devise a plan and be able to use that plan, even if he/she knows that they will die. They will do whatever it takes to keep the people safe. In the book/chapter IX, Odysseus lands on the island of the Cyclopes and made a decision on checking the island and its inhabitant, as he enters a cave, not knowing the dangers he will put on his friends. Regardless, he was brave enough to blind the Cyclops, so he can get out and avenge his fallen brethren's.
Besides being brave and everything, being a hero must also contain intelligence, for being a “hero” is not based off of brute strength. Intelligence is needed in both battle and in strategizing. Also, many have used intelligence in order to trick people, which is also known as cunning, for instance Odysseus was able to trick Polyphemous into thinking that his name was Nobody. As stated in the book “Nobody is my name. My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions.” ( book IX: 366-367) in this statement quoted from the book, it is obvious that Polyphemous is gullible and is easily tricked. Also, Odysseus (as in his disguise) is smart enough to trick the suitors that he was truly only just another old man. Odysseus, out of all the Greek heroes is most likely the most cunning and intelligent, even during the Trojan war he was able to devise a plan to create a wooden horse and hide inside the horse and would attack when the trojans least expect it.
