Third Essay
In the first three acts of Othello, Iago manipulates Roderigo, Cassio and also Othello. He manipulates them so well that at the end of the play he gets two of the three characters killed. He has some different intentions for each of these characters, but also has some of the same intentions for each of the characters. Iago's appearances "heavenly shows" differ from his true intentions "blackest sins".
For Roderigo, Iago's appearances to him are that he is a trustworthy friend. He also is a supporter of Roderigo. When he needs it Iago is also and advisor for him. What he appears to Cassio as and advisor and friend just like he does with Roderigo. With Cassio, Iago appears to be a faithful/dutiful soldier. He also shows Cassio his honesty towards him. In the case of Othello, Iago appears to be a loyal soldier, informant/ expert on the Venetian society. He appears to be a worldly man, and like Roderigo and Cassio, Iago also appears to be a trustworthy friend and also an advisor. He is also Othello's assistant and right hand man. These are the examples of how Iago appears to be with these three characters.
Iago's true intentions "blackest sins" for Roderigo is to take his money and be a "sport" or amusement of Iago's. Roderigo is also a pawn to get to Cassio. With Cassio, Iago is very jealous that Othello gave the job to Cassio instead of him and ever since Iago has been trying to get back at Cassio so he can get the job that he wanted. Like Roderigo, Iago uses Cassio as a pawn to get to Othello. Iago also wants to torment and get revenge on Cassio for him getting the job as commander. With Othello, Iago wants to get revenge on him for Othello giving the job to Cassio and wants to torment him. Ultimately Iago wants to destroy Othello. How he does so is that he makes him kill his wife Desdemona and also makes Othello kill himself. "Demand me nothing. What you know, you know. For this time forth I will never speak a word." (5.2.311-12.)
In conclusion Iago appears to these three characters in very different ways. He has to manipulate them so well so he will be able to destroy them or get the job that he did not get at first. Iago is just an evil character and gets two of these three men killed at the end of the play.
Second Essay
There are very specific qualities and actions that would make Odysseus a heroic character in The Odyssey of Homer. One of the qualities would be commitment. Another quality would be courage. These two qualities I think are two of the most important qualities that Odysseus displays in this epic poem. I also think that Odysseus does meet the standards for being a heroic character.
The first quality that I think is one of the most important would be commitment. This quality exhibits Odysseus very well. He had the commitment of finally getting home to Ithaka to reunite with his son Telemachos and his wife Penelope. After being away for almost twenty years, most men would not be able to make it home. But Odysseus had the commitment to finally get home which I think is a very important quality. "They Stepped from the strong-benched ship out onto the dry land, and first they lifted and carried Odysseus out of the hollow hull, along with his bed linen and shining coverlet, and set him down on the sand" (XIII, 201 116-119.) After being away for almost twenty years and being on several different wanderings Odysseus had finally made it home. After facing death at more than one time Odysseus showed us his commitment and courage that would finally get him home to Ithaka and his family.
Another quality that Odysseus shows in the epic poem is the quality of courage. Odysseus shows this quality very well I think. He shows his courage to make it home to Ithaka and his family. He also shows his courage to get out of certain situations, for instance when he is in the cave of Polyphemos the cyclops. He shows his courage by getting back at him by blinding Polyphemos after some of Odysseus's men were eaten by him. This really shows his courage to get back at this creature that did harm to his men. He also displays his courage when he makes it home and finds out that the suitors have not been loyal to his wife nor his household. He shows the quality of courage when he takes on all of the suitors and kills them all for all their wrong doing.
In conclusion the two qualities, being commitment and courage are both shown very well by Odysseus. In showing both of these qualities I think that Odysseus meets the standards of being a heroic character.

In the epic poem, The Odyssey of Homer, there are two major codes of behavior that are demonstrated in two different ways. These codes of behavior are loyalty and the code of hospitality.
Loyalty is an important code in the first half of the book because we find out how loyal Penelope is actually being to Odysseus while he is trying to find his way home. We also find out how disloyal all of the suitors are being to Penelope and Odysseus's household. In the earlier book we learn that Penelope is weaving something for one of her family members and she is doing this put off marrying one of the disloyal suitors. She tells the suitors, when she is finished weaving she will pick one of the suitors to marry. But she is so slick to unweave what she had done that day to keep delaying her selection of a suitor. This example shows her being loyal to Odysseus by keeping the suitors at bay while she hopes and prays that Odysseus will walk through the door one of these days and rescue her from the disloyal suitors.
In this first half of the book we learn that the hospitality code is a very important code that has to be followed. What the hospitality code is it that when a guest comes into your household. The guest is supposed to receive a gift and in return the guest gives the information of who they are and where they are going. We were are finally introduced to Odysseus he finally tells his story of his wanderings to the Phaeacians. He tells them of his wanderings to the land of the Cyclopes. When the Cyclops returns to his cave he eats two of Odysseus men. This is where the code of hospitality comes in, alls Odysseus wants was a gift from the Cyclops. Instead the Cyclops kills and eats some of the men he brought with him into the cave. Odysseus follows this code of hospitality everywhere he goes. When the Cyclops did not follow this code, Odysseus had to punish him for what he had done to his crew. "So seizing the fire-point-hardened timber we twirled it in his eye, and the blood boiled around the hot point, so that the blast and scorch of the burning ball singed all of his eyebrows and eyelids, and the fire made the roots of his eye crackle" (IX, 147 388-390.) He blinds the Cyclops and says that it was the gods punishing you threw me for not following this code.
In conclusion the two major codes in The Odyssey of Homer are the codes of loyalty and hospitality. Both codes show us what was important to people back in the ancient times.
