In Othello, Iago is the perfect manipulator. He preys on others' weaknesses with lies to get what he wants.Iago makes Roderigo, Othello, and Cassio believe all his well thought out lies to further his status and to take vengeance for a supposed affair between his wife and Othello. Iago carefully manipulates all three of these men along with the rest of the characters in this play.
An excellent scene the play starts with is of the conniving Iago fooling Roderigo. Roderigo has found out about the wedding between the Moor and Desdemona. Iago has not been working on winning Desdemona over for Roderigo. He has Roderigo give him money to provide Desdemona with luxurious gifts.Meanwhile, he spends the money on himself. Iago persuades Roderigo he has a chance to win Desdemona. He assures Roderigo that he loathes Othello, "I follow him to serve my turn upon him"(1.1.44.) In order for Roderigo to believe him he makes sure he knows he's only working against Othello.
Iago then uses Roderigo to make Cassio seem as if he is not fit for his position as lieutenant. He does this by having Roderigo go to Cyprus, start a fight with a drunken Cassio, and ruin the poor man's reputation. Othello then fires Cassio from his position. All in all Iago's purpose was to destroy Cassio's name because he yearns for his job. During the process of destroying Cassio's reputation, Iago has Cassio ask Desdemona for help. Iago convinvces Cassio that Desdemona is the only person who can plead his case to Othello. This scheme is particularly made to have Othello further suspect of Desdemona and hate Cassio even more for having an alleged affair with her.
Later on, Cassio is used for his cunning plans to fool Othello. Iago presents himself to Othello as a very honest man. Iago lies and tells Othello he loves him and is his companion. The revenge against Othello is for the supposed affair Othello has with Emilia. Iago deceives Othello by convincing him that Desdemona cheats on him with Cassio. Iago tells Othello"Look to your wife, observe her well with Cassio"(3.3.211.) Although, this is untrue, Othello begins to suspect Desdemona because of Iago's scheme.Iago needs to prove to Othello the relationship between Cassio and Desdemona;therefore, he plants Othello's handkerchief in Cassio's room. Then he has Othello hide while he speaks to Cassio about a prostitute. Iago has Othello think that they are conversing about Desdemona. After all of Iago's manipulations, Othello kills his beloved Desdemona.
The person that portrays the most evil characteristics in this play is definitely Iago. He does his best to manipulate Roderigo, Othello, and Cassio to further his own interests. Iago fabricates all types of story lines to convince these men he is a truthful friend. He would do anything to get what he desires by ruining their good names. In the end reality sets in with Iago and is finally caught and taken away to prison for his misdeeds.

A hero is a person of distinguished courage and ability, admired for his deeds and noble qualities (dictionary.com). In The Odyssey, Odysseus is a character well known for his heroism. Odysseus's loyalty to his family and kingdom and his ability to endure great trials to return home and defeat the suitors make him heroic. He is well known to endure the struggles and attempts of escaping lands of monsters and goddesses.Qualities that do not make a person heroic are being unfair, pompous, or greedy. Although Odysseus can be seen as arrogant, he accomplishes his true heroic objective to return to Ithaka to see his family.
Love and loyalty for his family and country are what drive Odysseus to return home. It is clear from the beginning that he wants to come back to his love Penelope. The obstacles he encounters, like being detained by Calypso, in Book V, force him to keep trying. Odysseus refuses to be married to Calypso or any other goddess, so that he is able to continue on his journey to return to Penelope. This example shows the loyalty Odysseus has for his family and kingdom.
Odysseus remains strong when he actually arrives home too. He endures more pain to regain his kingdom. He does not let all his problems break him down and strives with endurance. With the help of his son and his loyal servants Odysseus was able to get rid of the suitors and take his house back, something that should not have been taken away from him in the first place. Great and honorable men always strive for what they believe in.
After a very long journey home, Odysseus arrives and must confront every one. Odysseus finds the strength to wait a while longer to tell Penelope the truth.Once he arrives he realizes that he needs to get the suitors out the way. He has to eliminate the suitors because they have caused too much trouble. All the stress and strategies that Odysseus handles gave him power to at last strive for peace in his home and kingdom. In Book XXII, Odysseus kills all of the suitors not sparing any of their lives and this is a form of endurance. He punishes them all for entering his house and taking advantage of his absence. To defend his honor and home he, along with his son Telemachos, has to kill them. After Odysseus murders the suitors, he tells Eurykleia the suitors deserved it. "These were destroyed by the doom of the gods and their own hard actions..." (XXII, 413-415). He explains to her that these men deserved to die. They were reckless and lived by their own rules; therefore, they needed to pay for that.
It's the intention that counts. That's what I've always been told. Odysseus meets the heroic standards, in my opinion. There is proof that he was a strong and brave man. He does the impossible to try and get his family back. Family equals love to most heroes and he isn't any exception. From the fight of Troy to his journey home, Odysseus has many characteristics of a true hero. Odysseus can definitely be named a hero for being able to arrive home to his family and retake his kingdom. Even with many obstacles in his way he overcomes them by demonstrating his loyalty and endurance.

In the Odyssey of Homer there are codes of behavior in the society. This society is ruled by kings, queens, and gods. Therefore, the people follow the very strict rules, or else suffer horrible consequences. The codes are loyalty, hospitality, fidelity, moderation, endurance, and bravery. Odysseus follows almost all the codes of behavior, but the main ones are loyalty and hospitlity.
There were definitely all types of relationships in Ithaca that follow the rule of loyalty. There are relationships involving loyalty between family members, husbands and wives, kings and subjects, masters and servants, and gods and mortals.Odysseus's family's relationship is the most charming because their love for one another is what eventually reunited them. They were a family that no matter the circumstances stuck together. Throughout the twenty years of Odysseus being gone, Penelope and Telemachos love him dearly and refuse to forget him. This family love and care about each other unconditionally. Penelope and Telemachos are concerned for Odysseus throughout all these years. They never give up or stop trusting him. In Book III and Book IV, Telemachos leaves on a journey in search of his father. Then there is Penelope rejecting all her suitors by tricking them in never ending the weaving of Laertes's burial shroud. Antinoos's states, "There after in the daytime she would weave at her great loom, but in the night she would have torches set by,and undo it" (II, 104-105). Penelope is always loyal and faithful to Odysseus.Although Odysseus said Penelope could marry another man when Telemachos got older, she resists and waits for her long-lost husband.
Hospitality is also a code of behavior in this society. It plays a very important part due to Zeus being the god who enforces it. This code involves mortals when they receive guests or strangers in their homes. It's a known fact that they needed to be nice to the strangers especially because they didn't know who they were, or where they came from. Zeus reprimands any host if he fails to offer his guests food, gifts, and shelter. In return the duties of a guest are to inform the host of his or her background and reason to travel. When Telemachos and Odysseus are on their journeys, several of their encounters are very pleasant. On the other hand, many are disgraceful as when Odysseus had to stay in Calypso's land. Odysseus was not able to leave the island because of Calypso. Therefore, Calypso has Odysseus detained in her land.
Loyalty and hospitality are the two most important codes of behavior in this world of gods and mortals. Therefore, in this society these codes were crucial to follow.

A hero is a person of distinguished courage and ability, admired for his deeds and noble qualities. In The Odyssey, Odysseus is a character well known for his heroism. A very controversial question is whether or not Odysseus is depicted as a hero? The true meaning and qualities a heroic person has are love for what he or she does, endurance, and that they can learn from valuable lessons. Qualities that do not make a person heroic are being unfair, pompous, or greedy. Odysseus can be seen as an arrogant person; however, his true objective was to return to Ithaka to see his family.Love for his family and country is what drives Odysseus to return on a long journey home. The motivation was clear from the beginning that he wanted to come back to his love Penelope. The obstacles he encountered like being detained by Calypso, in Book I determined that he would keep trying. Odysseus refuses to be married to Calypso or any other goddess, so he would be able to continue on his homecoming.
Through out the very eventful journey home, Odysseus was clever enough to surpass unpleasant situations. Athene always praised him for being cunning and one step ahead of everything. From the victory of Troy to being liberated from lands of goddesses, Odysseus remained strong. He was able to get through all the major circumstances in his journey.
In Book XXII, Odysseus killed all of the suitors not sparing any of their lives. He punished them all for entering his house, and taking advantage of no superiority. The suitors disrespected his home, his wife Penelope, his son Telemachos, and they took advantage of the servants. The nasty suitors were just the last straw in regaining his authority in Ithaka. To defend his honor and home he had to kill them, along with his son Telemachos.
Odysseus said to Penelope when she saw the battle scene afterwards how the suitors deserved it. These were destroyed by the doom of the gods and their own hard actions (XXII, 413-415). He was explaining to her that these men deserved to die. They were reckless and lived by their own rules therefore; they needed to pay for that.
Heroes are persons that can also learn from their mistakes. Odysseus learned that he should be careful with his actions. In Book IX, for instance, he was boasting to the Cyclops about who he was, leading to Poseidon wanting to punish him for blinding his son. For future reference, Odysseus had to have realized that this was a mistake because if he had stayed quiet about his real name, the Cyclops would not have known who he was.
The qualities that do not make a person heroic are simply being arrogant and unfair. There are people that try their best to do good deeds because they want to be known, famous, or popular. This isnt the true meaning of what a hero is. Helping others comes from the heart and Odysseus did everything in his power to gain his life and family back.

Its a known fact that they needed to be nice to the strangers especially because they didnt know who they were, or where they came from. Also, Zeus would reprimand any host if he failed to offer his guests with food, gifts, and shelter. In return the duties of a guest are to inform the host of his or her background, and reason of travel. When Telemachos and Odysseus are on their journeys, several of their encountersare very pleasant. On the other hand, many were disgraceful as when Odysseus had to stay in Calypso's land.
These two codes of behavior were top priority when it came to the mortals and the gods. Loyalty and hospitality along with any code of behavior are permanent and always followed.
