Response Essay III

In his soliloquy near the end of Act II, Iagostates, “When devils will their blackest sins put on, / They do suggest atfirst with heavenly shows, / As I do now” (2.3.351-53). Iago uses this form of poetry to disguise his true plans for Roderigo ,Cassio and Othello. His plans for these men are different in certain ways, but his ultimate goal for each manis to destroy their reputation, gain power over each, and have them fighta gainst each other.

In act II scene III Iago starts to reveal hisplan of how he is going to ruin Cassio’s reputation to Montano and Roderigoalong with some other soldiers. Iago tells Montanothat while Cassio is a wonderful soldier, he fears that Cassio may have toomuch responsibility for someone with such a serious drinking problem. By Iago telling this to Montano this starts to make Montano think twice when it comes to Cassio’s decision making. Montano continues to suggest that something bes aid to Othello of Cassio’s drinking problem, This is the turning point thatIago wants to see happened as of now Montano is questioning Cassio and Othello’ s leadership.
Iago’s plan for Rodreigo is to turn him against Othello by making him believe that he still has a chance to marry or recapture the love of his dear Desdemona. Also Iago plan to become wealthy off of Roderigo because he believes that by paying Iago to brainstorm these devious plans to destroy Othello and Desdemona’s marriage he will regain her love and marry her.

In Act I Scene III Once again, Roderigo feels that hishopes of winning Desdemona have been dashed, but Iago insists that all will bewell. Iago mocks Roderigo for threatening to drown himself, and Roderigoprotests that he can’t help being tormented by love. Iago contradicts him, asserting that people can choose at will what they want to be. “Put but moneyin thy purse,” Iago tells Roderigo repeatedly in the paragraph that spans lines329–351,urging him to follow him to Cyprus. Iago promises to work everything out fromthere. In this act Iago declaring his hatred for Othello and his suspicion thatOthello has slept with his wife, Emilia. He lays out his plan to cheat Roderigoout of his money, to convince Othello that Cassio has slept with Desdemona, andto use Othello’s honest and unsuspecting nature to bring him to his demise.
Iago’s plan for Othellois also to ruin his reputation and possibly kill him if he had the chance too. Another plan that Iago has for Othello is to possible gain his ranking back as asoldier. The desired position is Lieutenant which Iago was stripped of hisranking by Othello as a result the ranking was given to Cassio. In act I sceneI Iago reassures Roderigo that he hates Othello. Chief among Iago’s reasons for this hatred is Othello’srecent promotion of Michael Cassio to the post of lieutenant. In spite ofIago’s service in battle and the recommendation of three “great ones” of thecity, Othello chose to give the position to a man with no experience leading men in battle. As he waits for an opportunity to further his own self-interest,Iago only pretends to serve Othello.

In conclusion throughout thedramatic tragedy Iago hides his true feelings about each character Othello,Rodriego, and Cassio in order to pursue happiness for himself possibly he creates these plans out of anger, pain, revenge, or pure madness, but things don’t turn out as planned for him.

In order for a person or character to be considered a hero or display heroic behavior the qualities heor she must have is wisdom, courage, bravery, intelligences, and honor. The actions of this person also play a huge roll in them being able to be considered ahero. The actions that disqualifies the person, is selfishness, ignorance, andlack of wisdom. In the Odyssey Odysseus to me is considered a hero because he does show heroic characteristics in different books. Three characteristics that mainly stand out are bravery, intelligence, and wisdom.

In book 9 Odysseus faces th eCyclops and displays his intelligence. Once Odysseus and his men entered the cave and found themselves starring down the face of danger. Odysseus was the only man able to create a plan to escape the Cyclops. “When he heaved up andset in the position the huge door stop, next he sat down and started milking his sheep and bleating his goats, each of them in order, and put lamb or kid under each one. But after he had briskly done all his chores and finished, again. Then at last I, holding in my hands an ivy bowl full of black wine, stood close up to the Cyclops and spokeout: here Cyclops have a drink of wine now that you have fed on human flesh.”(lines345-347) This when Odysseus established that he had to escape this massacre forthe sake of his companions live.

This is just one major explain of his intelligence. Then they are going to use the goats to escape by riding on the bottom of the cattle. The reason they used the goats was because Odysseus was intelligent enough to realize that every morning the Cyclops lets his cattle out to graze, but Odysseus knows that the Cyclops isn’t going to let them escape that easily so he decides to blind the Cyclops by stabbing him in his eye. To me this one specific event that’s displays his intelligence.

Another event that’s displayshis characteristic of bravery is in book 23 when he decides to take back hiskingdom from the suitors. Even though it was 108 suitors he stills decides to take on them all with not one doubt of dying or not regaining his kingdom.Odysseus also received help from the Goddess Athena without him knowing which also shows his bravery. (Lines 260-330)

The last characteristic Odysseus has is wisdom. To me this is the most important characteristic because it shows how powerful he is as a leader.Odysseus uses his wisdom to test his servants to see who was actually loyal during his time away and to see who is disloyal. By Odysseus doing this shows the reader or viewer that he is cunning enough to coming up with a plan such as this without revealing his identity. In book 24 Odysseus punishes his unfaithful servants for their disloyalty during his time away. (Lines 420-452)

In conclusion I believe that Odysseus can be characterized a hero doto his heroic behavior and the evidence from the text. In the text the characteristics that classify him as a epic hero are bravery, intelligence, wisdom, courage and honor. Without these characteristic he would nothing morethan a average king.

William Evans English literature Summer Session I Response # 1

The most important codes of behavior during the first half of the book The Odyssey of Homer are the hospitality code and the code of vengeance. These codes play apivotal part in the first half because they seem to be the top laws followed by man throughout each key event in the narrative. The first code the hospitality code is a code that isenforced by the god of all gods Zeus. Thebasic break down of this code is that any visitor visiting a foreign land or region it is duty of the host of that region to provide the visitor with food, shelter, and entertainment. Also it is the duty of the visitor to provide the host with information about their journey, their name, where they are from, their purpose in that region, their father’sname, and where they are heading.

You can see various examples in the narrative that refer to the hospitality code. The first example is when Telemalcus starts his journey to visit the noble man Nestor in Book IV. Nestor gives Telemalcus information shelterfood and entertainment. In return Nestor receives information about who Telemalcus was,his purpose there, and where he is heading. Another great example of the hospitality code is when Odysseus and his crew encounter the Cyclops. Even though theCyclops didn’t play his part in the hospitality code it still was agreat example. Once Odysseus and his crew entered theCyclops cave it was the duty of the Cyclops to become a host for Odysseus. The Cyclops decides not to follow the laws of hospitality, but in return Odysseus gives all of his information required by the code.

The second most important rule in the first half of the book is the vengeance code. The simple breakdown of this code is that if any person feels that their family member was murdered in a wrongful death that person has to take vengeance to clear their family member’s name. This law is also enforcedby Zeus. For example Telemalcus was forced by Athena, his mother in some ways and his father’s wise men to take vengeance in his father’s name to the suitors that disrespected his laws of the kingdom.Another example of this code is in Book VII when the God of the sea Poseidon takes vengeance to Odysseus for blinding his son the Cyclops.

In conclusion from the evidence I have provided above I believe that themost important codes in the first half of The Odyssey of homer are the hospitality code and the code of vengeance. These codes play a pivotal part inthe first half because they seem to be the top laws followed by man throughout each key event in the narrative.
